Dear list members,

Today I received in the post the joint statement of the IPA/STM
Information Identifier Committee (IIC) in support of the Digital Object
Identifier (DOI) System.

I was unable to find the statement on the Web, but I will send it to the
list once it is available. A short summary of the statement is given
below:

The IIC supports the development of the DOI system as an important
contribution to a solution of the need to identify copyrighted material
in commercial networks transaction.

It provides a means of routing network users to the information they are
seeking and also provides persistence, regardless of change of ownership
of the information. This will be of enormous benefit to libraries,
researchers and other potential users.

The system can incorporate excisting identifier standards, like ISBN and
ISSN, BICI and SICI, enabling publishers to identify their products
consistently in both traditional and electronic form. It can route to
the item itself or to information about the item thus facilitating both
trading and rights management. It is also able to incorporate numbering
systems from both media, such as codes from music works, video, film and
photography, and is designed for use in an increasingly multimedia
environment.

The statement explains that the system is far from complete. If it is
globally accepted, the DOI must have a trusted international network of
registration agencies.

The progress of DOI can be tracked via the DOI Web-site at:
http://www.doi.org

The DOI will be demonstrated at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 15 October
1997.

More information about future developments can be found at the Web-sites
