Dear list members,

A Dutch student International law has been sued by publisher Vermande
(daughter of SDU) for putting Dutch texts of law on the internet
(www.wetteksten.nu). The case was heard on 11 March 1998 at a court in
The Hague.

The student, Pavle Bojkovski, claims that he is entitled to make Dutch
texts of law available on the internet, because each citizen ought to
know the law according to Dutch law. Due to the monopoly of Kluwer and
State publisher SDU, one has to pay a lot of money before one has access
to the law electronically.

He stresses that it is unreasonable that the law which belongs to
everybody, is used by these publishers to earn a lot of money.

Publisher Vermande claims that they are the copyright owner of the
database and they have urged Pavle Bojkovski to take the texts of law
off the internet.

The court will decide on the case at 10.00 hrs on 20 March 1998.

I will keep you informed.

Kind regards,
Emanuella Giavarra
