THE PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION ELECTRONIC INFORMATION NETWORK
MEETING WITH EUROPEAN NATIONAL LIBRARIES
Following exchanges at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the first meeting of a
new liaison group between the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and
the Conference of European National Libraries (CENL) took place in London
on Wednesday (ed. 19 March 1997). The exchange of views opened up a
greater degree of common policies on use (whether as a permitted access
or by negotiated licence) of copyright products, particularly deposit
copies of electronic publications, in national libraries than had been
anticipated, and before the second meeting in Frankfurt it is hoped to
have produced a survey of national practices in the hope that guidelines
can be established on principles for access to documents in national
libraries. The degree of networking to be permitted (if any) is likely to
be a crucial issue.
The meeting was preceded by a dinner hosted by the PA at which a general
discussion took place which proved invaluable for establishing a
framework for detailed debate.
