Dear Heather,

thank you very much for your support !

The Expatriate Parliament's Speakers, convening in their spring meeting in Helsinki 10- 11 April 2000, handed over 25,700 signatures from all over the world to the Finnish Parliament's constitutional committee on April 11. The signatures were presented on behalf of the Expatriate Parliament by Speaker Pertti Paasio, chairman of the Finland Society. Anja Miller, the chair of the citizenship committee, gave a speech explaining the issue.
Vice chair Riitta Prusti spoke on behalf of the constitutional committee. According to Prusti, the committee has begun to discuss the dual citizenship issue. The question is under discussion at the Ministry of Interior Affairs as well.
- The constitutional committee will request reports on the issue from the Ministry of Interior Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We cannot say much about the time frame yet but we will try to push for as rapid a process as possible. The committee has quite a positive stand on the dual
citizenship, Member of Parliament Prusti concluded to the Speakers.
The problems caused by losing one's Finnish citizenship are familiar to the committee members. In November 1999, MP Kalervo Kummola presented to the Finnish Parliament a written inquiry on double citizenship. In December, Prusti made a motion in the Finnish Parliament on behalf of the issue. The bill was signed by 105 Members of Parliament.
Prusti sent also her thanks to the expatriates for the daily e-mail messages that the constitutional committee has received on the dual citizenship issue.
