Choreography and dance: Michèle Noiret
Music: Karlheinz Stockhausen: Tierkreis, for clarinet and piano

Solo Stockhausen by the Belgian choreographer Michèle Noiret deals with the choreographer's relation to the other through this music and thinking. It is an expression of the artist's admiration for and her personal and emotional relationship with someone who has a strong influence on her. The work is based on Karlheinz Stockhausen's composition Tierkreis for clarinet and piano from 1975. For her solo dance, the choreographer has chosen six of its twelve melodies, one for each sign of the zodiac.

Stockhausen, the German composer and theorist of new music, has had a crucial influence on the artistic development and the exact choreographical thinking of Michèle Noiret. She met Stockhausen while she was a student at Mudra in Brussels, from which she graduated in 1979. This meeting resulted in a lengthy collaboration which lasted until 1993. For fifteen years, Noiret interpreted the system of motional notation developed by Stockhausen, the objective of which was to make the various parts of the body partake in the musical work in the same way as musical instruments do. Although Noiret has modified Stockhausen's spatial-motional notation to suit the logic and nature of the dance itself, freeing herself from the serialist mindset, the demanding collaboration with the composer has inspired the choreaographer-dancer in a multitude of ways. It forms the basis on which she has developed her unique and unparalleled dance aesthetic.

In Solo Stockhausen Noiret's cinetic energy is strictly controlled, down to the various parts of her body. The physical expression of the dancer is like notation drawn onto space, following the musical structures from polyphony to the detailed nuances. The struggle between dance and music in the performance is marked by disarming humour.

Michèle Noiret founded her own dance company, Tandem, in 1986, but she has also created choreographies for other companies. Noiret has made appearances at several European dance festivals. She has also made films for television and animations.
