"All of this is happening in me, yet it feels like I'm observing it from the outside. Is the world inside of me? Devoured by my body? When did that happen? I saw images flicker on the blinds, and I caught just a glimpse of them, thinking: Suppose this time I see what he saw."

Carte Blanche, the Bergen dance company founded in 1990, is the flagship for Norwegian contemporary dance. Among its directors have been 'd6rjan Andersson, Philippe Blanchard, Cristina Caprioli and Jo Strömgren. Ina Christel Johannessen has been working with company since 1992, and has been its chief choreographer since 1996. Carte Blanche is also the only contemporary dance company in Norway to have a fixed organisation and to be fully subsidised by the government. The company's home base is Danseteatret, located in the centre of Bergen, but it can be seen on tours around Norway. During the last few years Carte Blanche has also toured abroad. These performances have been well received, particularly in Germany.

Ina Christel Johannessen's work as a choreographer is characterised by intensive and collective examining of the chosen subject matter as well as improvisation as a method of rehearsal. Her artistic ethic requires that each performance of the company communicates an internalised knowledge and sense of the subject matter and the choreographer's intentions. As source material, she has often used philosophical texts, the visual arts, film and discussions with artists.

Johannessen's choreographic material is original and inventive and interacts well with the performers personal presence and the conceptual and performative stage elements. The visual appearance of Johannessen's works has been defined by her close collaboration with lighting and stage designer Jens Sethzman. His concrete, rhythmic and constantly moving lighting design has become Johannessen's regular partner. Ina Christel Johannessen is also involved in zero visibility corp., a free dance company from Oslo, which is the co- producer of Suppose this time I see what he saw. The piece was premiered in Bergen, one of the European Cities of Culture, in April.
