Bibliographies of compositions
- A bibliography of composition means here (1) a catalogue or list of compositions and
- (2) a catalogue or list of publications made of these compositions (manuscripts, printed music in
- different formats). Most of these bibliographies are in the section of persons and groups.

Helsinki: Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura : Helsingin yliopiston kirjasto, [1952-1977]- The Finnish National Bibliography contains lists of printed music as appendices till 1977. The number of missing titles is quite big, since the principles and definitions have changed during decades. The most important gap is in the 19th century, where approximately only 10% of all printed music has been listed in the National Bibliography. From the beginning of 20th century the situation turn quite good. Unfortunately the level of cataloguing has always been similar with the books; there is usually no information about the contents of collections.
- From 1977 on the information about printed music cannot be found in any printed catalogues. The only source for these publications is the VIOLA database. This database is unfortunately available only by agreement and a paid license.

Composers have been divided in two categories, of which only the first one ("The more important composers") contains work lists. Both classical and popular music composers have been included, though the entries of the latter ones miss most of the composition information.
The work listst of the composers of the first category are quite comprehensive, but not much information about each work has been given. There are quite few opus numbers mentioned, though several Finnish composers have used them throughout their musical output.

Not basically a catalogue of compositions, this catalogue is however an important source for anybody studying the Finnish composers' work. Several detailed lists about the manuscript collections have been prepared by the library as well. The most important of them, the one about Jean Sibelius' manuscripts by Kari Kilpeläinen, has been published.
