In recent years, the European Union has
initiated many developments relating to the protection of
human rights. These range from the inclusion of human rights
provisions in its agreements with third states to the creation
of a legal basis for human rights protection within the Union
itself. That raises the inevitable question as to how
compliance with human rights can be monitored, and by whom,
and it is this question that is addressed in the present
study. The study covers the various monitoring mechanisms
operated by and within the Union comprehensively and in depth.
