General information

Kromfohrländer is one of the newest German dog breeds (registered 1955) and quite rare in Finland. The "Länder" is a medium sized, very intelligent, lively and active dog. It gets deeply attached to its' family and does not normally run away. Towards strangers, both dogs and humans, the "Länder" is reserved, but not fierce. The Kromfohrländer learns easily: it learns astonishingly quick to obey commands and to understand a great number of words. As the Kromfohrländer is fast, agile and learns easily, it is perfectly suited for agility. Well brought up the Kromfohrländer is a balanced and happy dog, which enrichens the owner's life for a long time.

The Kromfohrländer is white with brown spots. The coat is harsh and dirt resistant. Regular combing and brushing keeps the coat clean. Washing is required only when the dog is very dirty. Trimming is not necessary though picking can improve the general appearance of the dog. According to the coat type the breed is divided into two varieties: rough coated and smooth coated. So far the smooth coated variety is not found in Finland. There are variations in the coat from very short to almost as long as on the Tibetan terrier.

Generally the Kromfohrländer is a healthy and long living dog. As genetic illnesses gray cataract i.e. HC and the more rare epilepsy are found within this breed. These illnesses are being minimized through purposeful breeding. The dog has to undergo an eye test for the first time at about the age of one year. In case no changes are found an eye test is required every second year. If the dog is used for breeding the result of the eye test shall not be older than six months.
