The workshop is dedicated to the current trends, development problems and democratic challenges in Indonesia. It is an occasion to deepen our understanding of Indonesia’s Regional Autonomy and military rule, the human rights situation as well as the peace and reconciliation efforts. The workshop does not endorse separatism nor violent solutions to the problems in Aceh and West Papua.

    The workshop aims are
  • primarily, to inform Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), other representatives of the European Union institutions and Member States and European solidarity groups about the current situation in Indonesia, following the nation-wide implementation of the Regional Autonomy and the granting of the Special Regional Autonomy to the provinces of Aceh and West Papua;
  • secondarily, to discuss ways in which European actors can help in finding peaceful solutions to the conflicts in Aceh and West Papua.

The workshop is hosted jointly by Mr. Matti Wuori, MEP (Brussels) and the Finnish NGO Committee of 100/Indonesia group for peace and human rights (Helsinki).

In the organisation of the event, assistance from within the European Parliament comes from the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance and the Group of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR).

The event is supported by the following European solidarity groups: Tapol, the Indonesia Human Rights Campaign (United Kingdom), Watch Indonesia! (Germany), and The European Liaison Office of the International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (Indonesia).
