Tuija Hakkila, pianist

Tuija Hakkila is a pianist interested in different styles and her repertoire ranges from Johann Sebastian Bach to contemporary music. In the last ten years she has regularly performed with the fortepiano in classical and romantic programmes and has gained international acclaim for her complete recording of the Mozart Fortepiano Sonatas. She is involved in working with contemporary composers and has given many first performances of new works. Together with her fellow musicians she has made an effort in performing less-known older repertoire as well as enlightening the stylistic context of each period.

Hakkila has performed both as a soloist, in chamber groups and as a lied pianist in most European Countries, the United States, Japan, Africa and South America. She has recorded widely for broadcasting companies in different countries.

Her discography with the Finlandia Records includes a solo recital of Ravel and Dutilleux, the complete Mozart sonatas, the Flute trios by Haydn (with Mikael Helasvuo, flute and Anssi Karttunen, cello) the Complete music by Beethoven for cello and fortepiano and two duo recitals with 20th century music for cello and piano (with Mr. Karttunen).

Tuija Hakkila studied at the Sibelius Academy with Liisa Pohjola and Eero Heinonen and continued her studies at the Paris Conservatory with Jacques Rouvier and Theodor Paraskivesco. She studied the 20th century piano music with Claude Helffer in Paris and classical performance practices and fortepiano playing with Malcolm Bilson in the United States. Hakkila was a Fulbright Scholar at the Columbia University in New York City in 1985-86.

Since 1987 she has held a senior position in piano playing with the soloist department at the Sibelius Academy. Since 1989 she is also the artistic director of the annual Hämeenlinna Early Music Festival. As of 1999 she also directs the Concert series of the Sibelius-Academy.
