4. Education, training and cooperation with other libraries
The staff of the library
Once the system was up and running, training and general net-education became
the most important functions of the Knot at the Cable. The staff of the
Cable book have been trained both as a group and individually during
the whole period (the first 6 six months). The Katto-Meny Coop. Soc. has
been responsible for the training. Most of the working-time of
the Cable book staff goes to various kinds of Internet-presentations.
This means that the librarians have, in their turn, taken on a role
as net-guides. Therefore, contimuing training of the staff
has been a necessary condition for the functioning of this library.
A two-day course for the librarians of the other branches of Helsinki City,
combining lectures in the Main library (Pasila) and
practice in the Cable Book (Cable Factory)
library is scheduled for 2-3 November '94.
Visits
Journalists, teachers and pupils, officials, represantatives
of various organisations - and groups of librarians - have
contacted the Cable Book/Knot at the Cable
for guided tours to the Internet. During the first six months we
have counted 37 organized visits by groups from libraries in
other cities and municipalities. The visits have shown, that
several other public libraries in Finland stand at the threshold of
setting up own Internet-services for their patrons and staff.
The library-related mailing list (Kirjasto-Kaapeli)
An Internet mailing-list for librarians has been set up at the
Knot at the Cable. The name of the list is "Kirjasto-kaapeli" (The
"Library-Cable"). So far, ca one hundred people have subscribed to the
list. In order to subscribe to list, send email to the listserv.
