INTRODUCTION

The ELVIRA series of digital library conferences is now well
established as the primary UK digital library forum. The 4th
conference promises to be the most interesting yet, reflecting
the rapid expansion of research and development projects in
this field both in the UK and in other countries.

This year's conference features workshop/panel discussion
sessions as well as traditional paper presentations,
demonstrations and an exhibition. Thanks to generous cooperation
from British Telecom, the venue is their hi-tech Training and
Development Centre in Milton Keynes, England.

The conference is hosted by the International Institute for
Electronic Library Research at De Montfort University, UK.
Its sessions will run from lunchtime on Tuesday 6 May 1997 to
lunchtime on Thursday 8 May 1997, with optional extra social
excursions for interested delegates. The paper session topics
include:

Policy issues for digital libraries
Progress of UK 'eLib' projects
User issues (2 sessions)
Technical issues (2 sessions)
Electronic journals
Arts and humanities projects

The workshop/panel titles include:

Collaboration in the digital library
Building an integrated digital library
Setting priorities for digital library research
Copyright issues and economic models

To minimise the length of this message, and hence avoid creating
unnecessary overheads for uninterested recipients, the full
programme and booking form have been omitted. All information and
the booking form are available at the ELVIRA Web site:

http://www.iielr.dmu.ac.uk/ELVIRA/ELVIRA4/

To receive the conference programme and booking form on paper,
please email your details to fferlito@dmu.ac.uk

Despite the many facilities and activities on offer, the all-in
cost has been slashed from previous years to a great-value 380
pounds sterling (plus VAT for UK/European delegates). This
includes:

- comfortable overnight accommodation, all meals & refreshments,
- access to all sessions and the exhibition,
- a copy of the conference proceedings (on registration at the
  venue),
- Internet access, and free UK telephone calls,
- reception & banquet, and
- full use of the BT sports and fitness facilities.

Bookings for the conference must be received before 18 April
1997, to avoid a late-booking fee of 50 pounds sterling (plus
VAT for EU delegates). Cancelled bookings may incur a
cancellation fee.

CALL FOR POSTERS/DEMONSTRATIONS

Having set up a strong and exciting programme of peer-reviewed
paper presentations and topical workshop sessions, the ELVIRA
organisers are keen to strengthen the exhibition and
demonstrations of other current developments. We welcome
submissions of abstracts of poster presentations or
demonstrations of system developments by any academic or
public-sector institution (from any country). Commercial
exhibits will be charged a small fee: please contact
elvira@dmu.ac.uk for further details.

Poster displays, demonstrations and exhibits of research in
progress are invited. 100-200 word abstracts or descriptions of
the proposed item must be submitted to elvira@dmu.ac.uk by
FRIDAY 11 APRIL 1997. Abstracts will be made available online.
Poster exhibits will be limited to the area of a typical
exhibition display board (approximately 4 feet by 4 feet). A
table will be provided for demonstrations, but we cannot
undertake to provide suitable computers for everyone: please
contact us if you are unable to supply your own equipment. All
rooms will have Internet and ISDN access.
