Constructed in 1770 - 76, Oulu Cathedral is a large stone-walled cruciform church. Originally Baroque in style, it was rebuilt in neo-classic style on the basis of the plans made by architects C.L. Engel and A.W. Arppe after the great fire of Oulu town in 1829 - 32.

The aim of the reform was to restore the original Neo-classisism, yet retain the most valuable stylistic stratifications and employ contemporary formal language and technology for the new structures. The new architectural image was mainly achieved by restoring the original tectonics. The original vault cofferings, first realised as shade paintings, were the wall pilasters and beams. All old works of art, both paintings and textiles, were restored; moreover, many new works of art fitting to the renovated milieu were purchased.
