With its wire cable and girder motifs alluding to the sea and bridges, the Columbus shopping centre was designed as one of the landmarks of the new centre of the Helsinki suburb called Vuosaari. It unites the area split by Vuotie street and the metro line.

The shopping centre has two levels. Besides cafeterias, shops and restaurants, the upper level houses an inner street, which forms part of the main street continuing through the shopping centre via a park to the sea shore. The inner street also has a connection to the bridge for public transportation adjoining the building.
