Ruoholahti is a new residential and employment area next to the western harbour in Helsinki. The most important public outdoor spaces is the Ruoholahti Canal and its surrounding park, play park, school and square, and metro station. The cross-section of the canal is assymetrical; the sunny north side has benches and greenery, whereas the south side is steep and shady. There are five bridges over the granite-faced canal.
