During the latter part of the 1980's a joint project was launched involving the University of Vaasa and both the Finnish and Swedish Vaasa Polytechnics to move their laboratories into the former cotton mill, which is now known as the Palosaari Small Business Complex. The aim was to restore the original atmosphere of the weaving hall.

The thick, wooden roof beams were saved, and supported by primary steel beams inside the new, insulated roof. The roof beam grid was kept free of pipes, which were placed underneath the raised floor. Air conditioning and the distribution of electricity and gas along with the compressed air tanks were placed inside the regularly placed service towers.
