The Social Forum as a means and an end

Notes on the strategy of the WSF

By Mikael Böök*

In this article "The World Social Forum as a Means and an End. Notes on the strategy of the WSF ", I report some findings from my on-going research on the library as a political category. The article starts with a repudiation of the traditional "frontist" political strategy and continues with reflections on the strategical value of the "open spaces" of the Social Forum, the library and the internet. The problem of the WSF is not that it is (or appears to be) politically "ineffective", but that it is not enough open. The Social Forum needs to become more like a library, and the library more like the Social Forum.
